Representing Counties-Manukau Hockey in the Midlands Intercity Competition the Barbarians have finished fourth, a good result in the premier regional club hockey league for women.
On Saturday they travelled to Tauranga to play Mount Maunganui to decide third and fourth places.
The Barbarians finished the round robin just two points behind the Mount so a close game was guaranteed even though the Barbarians were without a number of their first choice line-up, including their goalie.
Mount Maunganui had a 1-0 lead at halftime and held the advantage through to the finish eventually running out 3-1 winners. The Barbarians goal was scored by Grace Ford.
Coach, Yogesh Hari, was pleased with his team. “This year’s Barbarians team has younger players which is great for Counties. The team has played some extremely attractive hockey at times but has not achieved consistency”, he said.
They now go into a shorter Intercity League and have a chance to show the consistency the coach wants. They will be boosted by the return of Midland NHL player, Imogen Neil (Onewhero Hockey Club), who will play for the Barbarians when her NHL schedule allows.
The Barbarians will be joined by Otumoetai (winners of the Intercity) Rotorua, Taupo and Mount Maunganui in the new short league which for them starts with a game against Taupo on July 20th.
The ten- team Midland Men’s Intercity League has just past the halfway stage. Pukekohe Indians are third on the table with Kohekohe right behind them in fourth. Both clubs recorded wins at the weekend.
